Five years before Jakarta was born, s Portuguese captain from Malacca, Henrique Leme, cocluded a treaty with the representatives of the Hindu Kingdom in Pajajaran in the harbour town of Sunda Kelapa on the 21st August 1522. Sunda Kelapa is the oldest name of the Indonesia Capital.
The book provides the reader with at all still existent original sources for the history of Jakarta before the arrival of the first Dutch ship in 1596. The earliest sources are batutulis or stone inscriptions in Sanksrit letters, Chinese reports and Japanese safe conducts for sailors, but the main body of this book consists of Portuguese reports, notary deeds and maps of the 16th century. They provide us with a wealth of knowledge about early Sunda.

An Equinox Classic Indonesia Book : The Decline Of Constitutional Democracy In Indonesia

Details

Paperback: 644 pages

Publisher: Equinox Publishing (January 10, 2006)

Language: English

ISBN-10: 9793780452

ISBN-13: 978-9793780450

Product Dimensions: 8.9 x 6.1 x 1.6 inches

This is an intensive study of Indonesia politics from the attainment of full independence in December 1949 to the proclamation of martial law in March 1957, and President Soekarno’s subsequent establishment of “guided democracy”. It is intended as a contribution to the ongoing discussion of democracy in the new states of Asia and Africa, of the ways in which Western political institutions are transformed when employed in non-Western social settings, and of the obstacles to be overcome if such institutions are to operate in consonance with the authority systems of the new nations and with their solution of economic and administrative problems.

Now brought back into print as a member of Equinox Publishing’s Classic Indonesia series, The Decline of Constitutional Democracy is considered to be the definitive study of Indonesia in the 1950s and will be of great interest to the growing number of social scientist concerned with the pre-industrial nations and in particular with their efforts to use and adapt Western political institutions. This is a solid and scholarly account, but, writing on the basis of much personal observation, Dr. Feith manages to present his material in such a way that readers with no previous background in the subject will be able to follow the book almost as easily as will specialists.

ISBN-13: 978-9814155977

Product Dimensions: 9 x 6.7 x 0.7 inches

Dedicated entirely to the study of the societies of South, Southeast and East Asia, the Ecole Francaise d’Extreme Orient (EFEO) is the oldest and most prestigious French academic institution in Asia. However, there is surprisingly little general awareness of this society, beyond the facts that its headquarters are now located in Paris and its foremost area of research is archaeology.

This volume makes good this dearth of background information, and does muc more besides. A Century in Asia – the History of the Ecole Francaise d’Extreme Orient 1898-2006 traces in detail the institution’s history, starting from its founding in Saigon in 1900, right through to the tumultuous years of the two World wars and several civil wars, to its present-day status.

by Mary Sabina Zurbuchen (Editor)

Paperback : 368 pages (Paperback)

Publisher : Singapore University Press (Mar 2005)

Language : English

ISBN-10 : 9971693038

ISBN-13 : 978-9971693039

As Indonesia emerges from authoritarian rule, public intellectuals have begun to question the way the country’s past has been remembered, memorialized and inscribed. BEGINNING TO REMEMBER addresses the many ways in which Indonesians have dealt with memory, its formation and its manipulation.

The writers in this collection consider how narratives of the past have taken shape, at local, national, group and individual levels in Indonesia, exploring the reasons why various understandings of issues such as national solidarity, citizenship, power, ethnic identity, religious belief and regional loyalty appeal to different elements in modern Indonesian society. They focus in particular at how Indonesia remembers trauma and violence. This diverse group of Indonesian and international scholars and commentators develop an understanding of the issues that most concern Indonesians as they reinterpret their recent history and the society it has shaped.
